Select Driving School provides a driving curriculum that complies with Minnesota standards and creates a learning experience that is relaxed and safe for all students. We understand that getting behind the wheel can be stressful for some students, so we use methods that teach good skills and habits while limiting anxiety. You can start lessons once you have obtained your MN permit.
Behind the Wheel lessons include three 2-hour lessons that fulfill the 6 hours of training required by Minnesota state law. Lessons will usually start at an assigned meeting spot inside Watertown city limits.

We recommend taking LESSON 1 after students have driven a few times with a parent and feel comfortable behind the wheel. We would like the first lesson to take place before the student has formed too many driving habits. Your instructor will teach key skills that will encourage good driving habits.
Next, we recommend that students think about when they will take their drivers test and schedule LESSON 3 anywhere from three to four weeks before their driving test. This lesson will be a good time to go over things and prep for the test.
LESSON 2 should be scheduled at some point between LESSONS 1 and 3 to allow time for practicing skills.
The following is an example of a possible timeline (assuming that students are comfortable to start lessons and plan to get their permit and license when they are eligible).
August 1 - 15th birthday and permit test
Mid- September - October - Lesson 1
February - Lesson 2
End of June / Early July - Lesson 3 and prep for test
August 1 - 16th birthday and driver's test
Every student is different and view learning to drive differently. Take your time and work through the process with a timeline that is best for you. Your instructor can help you decide the best timing for your situation.
Start slow and practice in a place where you feel comfortable. Don’t be in a hurry to do what experienced drivers are doing because, well, you are not there yet. Consistently build good driving habits and work on the skills that are taught in your lessons when you are driving with your parents or other licensed adult. Don’t avoid new situations like snow or night driving. You will need these skills as well and the more practice you have before you get your license, the more more confident you will be when you are driving on your own.
